Mid-Rise Jean (for less than $18!)
Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall! As we head into Labor Day Weekend, I can’t help but think about changing over my closets to prepare for cooler weather here in Chicago.
Fuzzy sweaters. Puffy vests. Cozy scarves. Worn-in jeans. And a classic fall look isn’t complete without a pair of comfortable boots. Thanks to my friends at Jambu & Co. I was gifted these gorgeous tie-up leather and suede boots to take for a test drive. The Burch boot is such a versatile shoe which I’ll wear with anything from jeans and a sweater to a dress with leggings. As an added bonus, the outer sole is water resistant and the footbed is made of cushy, comfy Memory foam. These aren’t your typical fashion shoe, but a very high-quality shoe that’s also good to your feet. GIVEAWAY! Jambu & Co. will gift a free pair of shoes of choice to one lucky The Style Du Jour reader! All you have to do is follow me on Instagram (@thestyledujour) and make sure to follow the prompts in my post on September 7 (mark this date, don’t forget!) If you want to get to shopping before then, make sure to use code DUJOUR17 to save 10% on any full priced item through September 21. A comfortable boot is a must-have closet staple for fall and these Burch boots, with a stacked heel and lace-up ties, are the perfect combination of classic with a modern twist. And don’t forget – you could get your hands on my boots or any shoe of your choice for free by entering my Instagram giveaway on September 7. Until then…Happy Labor Day weekend! XO, Emily
When I add a new piece of clothing to my closet I consider the versatility of the apparel first. Can I wear it for more than one season? Is the color versatile to style with other prints already in my closet? Can I dress it up for evening events as well as throw it on for a day running around with the kids?
One type of dress that fits the above criteria is a maxi dress. Beyond versatility, it’s flattering and comfortable to wear. It’s also one of my favorite pieces to transition from hot summer to crisp fall days.
Here are two ways to extend the life of your summer maxi dress into fall:
Pair a wrap-style maxi dress, like this Emma White Multi Floral Maxi Dress from Tobi* (currently sold out, but here is a similar style from Tobi) with a pair of fringed denim and a block heel sandal or bootie. A flowy maxi dress adds a feminine touch to a casual jean. If you’re a mom of little ones like me, wearing pants under your dress is also out of necessity!
Pair a breezy slip-style maxi dress, like Imagine This Mauve Maxi Dress from Tobi* with casual fall layers like a thin turtleneck (like this one I’m wearing from Amazon Fashion) and a cozy bomber-style jacket. Add a pair of sneakers or dress up with a block heel or flat mule shoe and a fun handbag (like my favorite vintage Fendi handbag I purchased in Italy fourteen years ago – more about that another day!)
Also, don’t be too quick to pack away your shorter summer dresses. Pair jeans and a colorful boot with a shift dress (like this Plunging Shift Dress from Tobi*) to extend the life of your little summer frocks.
Which is your favorite dress from Tobi for transitioning into fall?
*I was gifted these dresses from Tobi in exchange for sharing them on The Style Du Jour. All styling opinions and thoughts are my own.*
The four sibs. My parents were crazy for having four kids in six years (!!) But I’m sure glad they did. <3
Missing two important people in this photo though, Maggie and Andrew!
Last weekend, my family traveled to Toronto for my dear cousin’s wedding. It was a gorgeous day filled with laughter, love, dancing and tons of food topped off with a Portuguese seafood feast at midnight.
This Few Moda dress from Neiman Marcus was the perfect summer party dress to take me from the ceremony to the seafood buffet (although I ended up wearing another outfit earlier in the day for the church ceremony, just for the fun of it). It’s wedding appropriate with delicate detailing and a midi length skirt, but it’s comfortable fit and cute side pockets make it playful and perfect for dancing the night away.
Playing up the on-trend pairing of girly pink and fiery red, I played up this pretty pink with a matte red lip. I especially love a matte color because it stays put after enjoying a five-course meal and some cocktails.
Anyone else enjoying the weddings of family and friends this summer? If so, remember to give Few Moda gowns a look for truly elegant and on-trend dresses.
P.S. Speaking of weddings, in need of some fresh shower and wedding gift ideas? My next post will share some creative and thoughtful artisan gifts from one of my favorite gifting sites. Stay tuned!
Ark Bamboo Bag (*Want to know where to find this replica for less than $30?! Visit CocoBordeaux, the blog of the super chic Colleen, and make sure to subscribe to her e-newsletter to get all the shopping details!*)
This time of year, my closet is packed with all my gauzy summer dresses and jumpsuits, but I can’t resist rotating my four-season basics like a worn-in cropped jean, striped tee or nice leather loafers on cooler summer days. I just picked up these Sam Edelman Talia leather loafers from Lord & Taylor on clearance, but they’re still available on sale from Zappos. I think year-round staples look fresh with a seasonal accessory like tassel-detailed gems or this bamboo Ark bag (Did you catch my note about where to find a perfect designer replica for less than $30?! See my above note!). What is your favorite piece of clothing that works for you in all seasons? XO, Emily
Is there anything more nautical and classically chic than navy and white? Throw a monogram on it and let’s just call it a day and head for The Cape. 😉
For the next three months, there are three navy and white items in my closet that I will probably use every day. So versatile and timeless, they can be mixed and matched for a pulled together look whether it’s a trip to the farmer’s market, a day at the beach or dinner al fresco in town.
Straw Tote with Monogrammed Detail. Even better, how about a tote with water proof lining and designated pockets for your phone, sunscreen and a collection of sea shells?! This generous-sized straw woven tote from Thirty-One Gifts is the perfect size to easily fit a couple beach towels or a stash a healthy haul from the farmer’s market. I have to thank a dear friend of the family, Darlene, who is also a very kind and loyal supporter of my blog ventures, for gifting me this lovely tote that I simply adore. In addition to a fabulous bag, I love how Thirty-One Gifts empowers and supports women to own their own business and build a career on their own terms (all the #girlboss love!). This bag comes in two sizes: Dream Big Tote, shown here, and Little Dreamer.
If you’re looking for a fresh special occasion gift idea, this tote would make the perfect housewarming, engagement, hostess, bachelorette gift by itself or coupled with a bottle of prosecco and a bunch of fresh flowers.
Navy One-Piece Swimsuit. This navy suit from J.Crew is anything but a boring one-piece. The white stitch detailing, tie shoulder straps and a deep “V” cut give it a sophisticated touch. Add a high-waisted linen pant (Asos, $48) and block heel (Target, $22.98) and you can easily wear this from beach to happy hour.
Silk Scarf. A colorful scarf is so versatile in the summer. From taming beachy fly-aways to adding a pop of color to a tote bag or dressing up a simple tee-shirt dress when worn around your neck, a silk scarf is so effortlessly chic and timeless. I love collecting scarfs from my travels (like this Balmain scarf I found last summer at Celeste Vintage in Florence) or adding to my collection with bright patterns like these Italian-made silk scarfs from J.Crew.
Do you have a shared love for all things navy and white? 💙 If you have another chic summer essential, please share!
My uniform in the summer is a breezy dress and right now is the perfect time to stock up on lovely one-piece dresses from Target like this Who What Wear Collection caftan.
PSA: They have a buy one, get one 50% off for Memorial Day with an added 20% off with code MEMDAY.
I love the classic silhouettes and color palettes with of-the-moment details like cut-out shoulders, ruffles and gingham prints. Here is a round-up of my wish list favorites, most of which are less than $30 before the promotions, including a couple I’ve ordered for myself. What does your summer style look like?
